OrgYpOp Releases Free Music on the Net
Not all recording artists are fearful of Napster. One example is the Montreal based group, OrgYpOp, which is willingly giving away its music on the Internet.
The title of OrgYpOp’s latest album, RE:FW: illustrates its novel distribution concept. The term RE:FW: is usually seen in the subject heading of an e-mail sent to many addresses. In this case, OrgYpOp is forwarding its album to Internet users, so they can continue the musical chain, by forwarding it on to more people. Founder of OrgYpOp, Itsik Romano, believes that “one way of exposing an independent artist to a mass audience is by giving them access to the music that would otherwise not be heard in major venues.”
RE:FW: is available for free download at www.orgypop.com. At that point, listeners have the opportunity to make their own album kits. After burning a copy onto CD, the original album cover can be printed as well. In the site, a survey allows people to vote on their favourite song from the 16-track album.
OrgYpOp independently released its first album in 1998. Since then its music has been played on various radio stations around the world. In May 2000, OrgYpOp re-released its debut album, distributed by Philippines’ major label, Tiger Records.
